COVID-19: Trump severs US relations with World Health Organisation

United States (US) President Donald Trump, yesterday carried out his threat, as he terminated the partnership between his country and the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to The Guardian , Trump announced the end of the relationship during a news conference in the Rose Garden, White House, citing WHO’s handling of the pandemic in China as part of the reason. “We have detailed the reforms that it must make and engaged with them directly, but they have refused to act. Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will today be terminating our relationship with the WHO and redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs. “The world needs answers from China on the virus. We must have transparency,” Trump said. According to him, the decision is part of steps intended to punish WHO and China for what he dubbed a “cover-up” of the coronavirus outbreak on Chinese soil. Former NNPC GMD Maikanti Baru is dead

Maikanti Baru, the former group managing director of the NNPC, has died. Premium Times reported. Mr Baru died late Friday night in yet undisclosed location and of undisclosed ailments. He was 60. His death was announced early Saturday morning by the current head of the state-owned energy conglomerate, Mele Kyari. “My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,” Mr Kyari wrote on Twitter. “He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.” Mr Baru was born in 1959 and led a career in engineering, rising through the ranks at the NNPC before he was eventually appointed to lead the organisation by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016. Mr Buhari replaced Mr Baru with Mr Kyari in July 2019. It was not immediately clear what caused his death or for how long he had been ill. Buhari challenges farmers; says there is no money to import food

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged Nigerian farmers on the need to embark on massive productive agricultural activities this farming season as Nigeria has no money for food importation. COVID-19: NAFDAC begins testing of four virus remedy drugs

National Agency for Food Drugs and Administration Control (NAFDAC) has started working on Coronavirus potential  remedy drugs submitted by Nigerians. According to the Director-General (DG) Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the submissions were made after the agency called for expression of interest for the COVID-19 related medicines from researchers and practitioners. The NAFDAC DG said that the four applications submitted would undergo “due diligence”. The DG also added that instead of spending huge amount of money to get the COVID Organic from Madagascar, she would prefer such money to be spent on herbal remedies produced in Nigeria.

Presidency explains why FG is not giving funds to states to fight Coronavirus

The Presidency has explained why the federal government is not giving funds to states to fight the Coronavirus pandemic.  The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina who spoke on a radio programme accused some Governors of prioritising the quest for money over the need to overcome the disease in the state.
